Denotation and Connotation work


  1. Identify each sign (denotation).
  2. What does it stand for? (connotation)
  3. Does it have more than one meaning?
  4. Which groups of people can/cannot read it? e.g. because of age, geography etc

      
    1. Its an apple.
    2. It stands for the brand apple which make products such as the iPhone, iPod, iPad and apple mac.
    3. It has more than one meaning depending on what age group or where the person is from.
    4. The older or really young generation may not be able to recognize it as the brand Apple.
    1. Its two arrows.
    2. It stands for the car brand Citroen who design and make cars.
    3. Different types of people may see it as arrows whereas a lot of people will see it as the brand.
    4. Some younger people may not understand it as they are too young and some females may not know it as they may not be as interested in cars.










    1. Its a circle with an arrow diagonally off the side of it.
    2. It is the male gender symbol.
    3. It doesn't have more than one meaning and is a multinational symbol.
    4. Younger children may not know the symbol. Also other people that have never come across the symbol will not know it.









    1. It is an M letter in yellow and has a red background.
    2. Almost everyone in the world will recognize this symbol as McDonald's unless they are too young or don't live in a rich enough area to have fast food.
    3. It doesn't have more than one meaning it is just the international McDonald's symbol. 
    4. The only people that can't read the symbol are poor people that may not live near or be able to afford fast food.

    1. It is a red circle with a red line going through the middle of it.
    2. It stands for no entry.
    3. No it only has one meaning it is the world symbol for no entry.
    4. Only really young people may not be able to read it as they don't understand it.












    1. It is a sign with a man and women separated on it.
    2. Its stands for male area or toilets and female area or toilets.
    3. It could mean that gender toilets or that gender area either.
    4. Really young people may not be able to understand it.












    1. It is a mouth with a tongue sticking out.
    2. It is the band logo/symbol for The Rolling Stones.
    3. It may have more than one meaning for someone who doesn't recognize the symbol as the rolling stones.
    4. The younger generation and people that don't know who the rolling stones are may not know what it means.
